Which degree is right for me?

The Faculty of Medicine at LMU offers a total of five different doctoral degrees. Here you can find out which degree might be right for you.

Our degrees at a glance:

  • Title: Dr. med.
  • Admission requirements for domestic applicants: Successful completion of the first medical examination
  • Admission requirements for international applicants: Successful completion of medical studies
  • Duration: at least 8 months of full-time research
  • Supervision:
    • by a three-member Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC)
    • All TAC members must hold a professorship, be habilitated or have been accepted for habilitation.
    • 2 TAC members must belong to the Faculty of Medicine.
    • There are no requirements for the doctoral subject of the TAC members.
  • Curriculum: at least 60 hours (25 hours of interdisciplinary courses and 35 hours of subject-specific courses)
  • Language of the dissertation and defense: German or English

  • Title: Dr. med. dent.
  • Admission requirements for domestic applicants: Successful completion of the first dental examination
  • Admission requirements for international applicants: Successful completion of dental studies
  • Duration: at least 8 months of full-time research
  • Supervision:
    • by a three-member Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC)
    • All TAC members must hold a professorship, be habilitated or have been accepted for habilitation.
    • 2 TAC members must belong to the Faculty of Medicine.
    • There are no requirements for the doctoral subject of the TAC members.

  • Admission requirements for domestic applicants: Completed Master's degree (or equivalent) in, for example, health sciences, natural sciences or a related subject.
  • Duration: at least 2 years of full-time research
  • Supervision:
    • by a three-member Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC)
    • All TAC members must hold a professorship, be habilitated or have been accepted for habilitation.
    • 2 TAC members must belong to the Faculty of Medicine.
    • There are no requirements for the doctoral subject of the TAC members.
  • Curriculum: at least 60 hours (25 hours of interdisciplinary courses and 35 hours of subject-specific courses)
  • Language of the dissertation and defense: German or English

  • Titel: Dr. rer. nat.
  • Admission requirements for domestic applicants: Completed Master's degree (or equivalent) in a natural science.
  • Duration: at least 2 years of full-time research
  • Supervision: by a supervisor who holds a professorship, is habilitated or has been accepted for habilitation and holds the title Dr. rer. nat. themselves.
  • Language of the dissertation and defense: German or English

  • Title: Ph.D. Medical Research
  • Admission requirements for domestic applicants: Completed Master's degree (or equivalent), for example in health sciences, natural sciences, a related subject or in human, dental or veterinary medicine.
  • Duration: minimum 3 years and maximum 5 years of full-time research
  • Supervision:
    • Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC) of at least 3 members.
    • The 1st and 2nd TAC members must hold a professorship, be habilitated or accepted for habilitation.
    • The third TAC member must be a PI.
    • 2 TAC members must belong to the Faculty of Medicine.
    • There are no requirements for the doctoral subject of the TAC members.
  • Curriculum: at least 30 ECTS (17 ECTS Methods, 5 ECTS Skills and 8 ECTS Conferences)
  • Language of the dissertation and defense: English
