Curriculum and courses for the Ph.D. in Medical Research

A curriculum totaling 30 ECTS credits is required for the Ph.D. in Medical Research. Document your participation in courses, seminars and other continuing education programs in the Campus Portal so that you can track your progress at any time.

Curriculum and courses

The Ph.D. Medical Research has a minimum duration of 6 semesters, in which you must earn a total of 180 ECTS:

  • 140 ECTS for your doctoral project (3 years of full-time research)
  • 30 ECTS curriculum
    • 17 ECTS Methods
    • 5 ECTS Skills
    • 8 ECTS Conferences
  • 10 ECTS Disputation

Each of the Ph.D. core areas and associated programs offers a wide range of courses. Detailed information on the respective courses (when, content, required prior knowledge, etc.) is available on the program's website and directly from your program coordinator.
You may also receive information about available spots and possible courses from your program coordinator or the MMRS.

Please note that courses, which you attended as part of your previous studies or which were used to achieve another academic degree cannot be credited towards the Ph.D. curriculum.

ECTS for methods, skills and conferencescordion (standard)

ECTS for "Methods" are recognized for:

  • Courses, classes or seminars in which you learn a new technique that is necessary or useful for your project
  • Seminar series: 1h/ week: 0.5 ECTS, 2h/ week: 1 ECTS for a full semester
  • Journal clubs: 1h/ week: 0.5 ECTS, 2h/ week: 1 ECTS for a full semester
  • Methods courses (e.g. microscopy, FACS, sequencing, database management): 0.5 ECTS/ full day
  • Laboratory courses: 0.5 ECT/full day
  • Laboratory animal science: 3 ECTS)
  • External laboratory visits: max. 3 of 30 ECTS in total
  • Online methods courses: 0.5 ECT/full day
  • Establishment of a new method in the laboratory: max. 3 of 30 ECTS in total
  • Talks or project presentations to which you are invited, e.g. during a visit to another laboratory: 0.5-1 ECTS, max. 2 out of 30 ECTS in total
  • Please enter talks/poster presentations that you have given at conferences or meetings under "Conferences".

ECTS for "Methods OR Skills" are recognized for:

  • supervising students and writing or reviewing scientific articles: max. 2 out of 30 ECTS in total)
  • Teaching (courses, lectures, etc.): max. 2 out of 30 ECTS in total
  • Supervision of a methods course: 0.5 ECTS/ full day, max. 2 out of 30 ECTS in total)
  • Programming courses: 0.5 ECTS/full day

ECTS for "Skills" are accepted for:

  • Courses, classes or events where you learn "soft skills" that will be useful to you regardless of your future career and help you excel in any workplace, such as courses on topics like:
    • scientific writing: 0.5 ECTS/full day)
    • Presentation skills: 0.5 ECTS/full day
    • Negotiation skills: 0.5 ECTS/full day
    • Courses on designing posters or presentations: 0.5 ECTS/full day
    • Scientific reading: 0.5 ECTS/full day
    • Good scientific practice, etc.: 0.5 ECTS/full day
  • Organization of a retreat or conference: max. 2 of 30 ECTS in total

ECTS for "Conferences" are recognized for:

  • the attendance of:
    • Conferences: 0.5 ECTS/full day)
    • Meetings: 0.5 ECTS/full day
    • Symposia: 0.5 ECTS/full day
    • Retreats: 0.5 ECTS/full day
  • Poster presentation or lectures at a conference or meeting: 0.5-1 ECTS depending on effort
  • Participation in online conferences: 0.5 ECTS/full day

The following items can NOT be part of your curriculum:

  • Presentations at your own working group meetings/ lab meetings
  • Presentations at TAC meetings
  • Progress reports to your TAC members
  • German language courses

If no certificate of attendance is issued for an event, this template can be used as a substitute. Please note that the confirmation by the 1st TAC member should only replace an official certificate of attendance if no alternative is available.
