Our institute is dedicated to the research, diagnosis and treatment of neuroimmunological diseases.
Neuroimmunological diseases are autoimmune diseases of the nervous system. In autoimmune diseases, the immune system "mistakenly" targets the body's own structures. By far the most common neuroimmunological disease is multiple sclerosis. The Institute of Clinical Neuroimmunology was founded at LMU in 1999, making it the first university institute in Germany specifically dedicated to research into neuroimmunological diseases.
In our neuroimmunology outpatient clinic at the LMU Clinic, we advise and treat people with multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis and other neuroimmunological diseases. We also conduct clinical studies to improve diagnostics and therapy.
Our research groups at the BMC are dedicated to investigating the fundamental mechanisms of neuroimmunological diseases. We investigate how autoimmune reactions can develop in the nervous system and simulate this in model systems. We want to understand how the interaction between immune cells and nerve cells controls the formation of local inflammatory foci and how the nervous system reacts to the inflammatory damage.
