Semester Abroad

The Medical Curriculum Munich (MeCuM) is open to students from our global exchange partners.

Renowned for academic excellence, LMU welcomes students from European universities to apply for an exchange semester via the Erasmus or Swiss-European Mobility Programme. Students from partner universities outside Europe are also welcome to apply via LMUexchange.

Exchange students can attend selected courses & lectures or clinical internships during the clinical phase of the Medical Curriculum Munich (MeCuM).

All essential information is available on this website, so please read through it carefully. If you have further questions, we are happy to assist:

Application Requirements for both Studies and Internships

To attend courses or clinical internships as part of the Medical Curriculum Munich, you must be enrolled at one of LMU's partner universities and have reached the relevant academic level for the components you have selected.

Your entire application process must be completed by the following deadlines:

  • 15 May for the winter semester (first semester)
  • 15 November for the summer semester (second semester)

Exchange students are only considered if they complete both mandatory steps:

Step 1: Apply for moblity through your home university.

Deadlines for your nomination through your coordinator at your home university are:

  • 15 April for winter semester (first semester)
  • 15 October for summer semester (second semester)

Step 2: After nomination, the application process proceeds at LMU, for which two online applications are necessary.

The Learning Agreement specifies the courses or internships you intend to complete at LMU. Before submitting your application to LMU, please discuss and finalize your choice of courses and the credits with your home university.

Please submit your Learning Agreement together with your general LMU exchange application. Once admitted, the International Office for Medicine will confirm your Learning Agreement and you can then download the confirmed version via the Medical Faculty’s application portal.

Please note: Participation in selected internships is subject to availability. If a hospital placement is unavailable, adjustments to your Learning Agreement may be necessary after your arrival. After matriculating at LMU, students taking courses & lectures can view their personal timetables in the Medical Faculty’s Campusportal, about one week before lectures start.

Please have all changes to your Learning Agreement confirmed first by the International Office for Medicine at LMU and then by your home university.

Learning Agreements can only be modified during your mobility period, not before lectures begin. You can find the official semester start and end dates on our website under "Vorlesungszeiten".

  • 2. Application at Medical Faculty itself via our Medicine application portal

Apart from the online form, you must also upload the following documents via this application portal:

    1. Official language certificate / LMU confirmation of language skills (see table under German Language Requirements).

    2. Proof of sufficient immunity to measles: Please have the form Certificate of complete protection against measles (PDF, 336 KB) or equivalent completed and signed by your GP or the university medical facility at your home university.

    3. List of selected courses or your internship application (see our detailed instructions on choice of courses and requirements for internships for this purpose).

As soon as you have completed both steps, we can begin processing your application. Applications are checked by the Dean's Office of the Medical Faculty and the relevant LMU hospitals.

German Language Requirements

Important: The language certificate / LMU Confirmation of Language Skills form must be submitted with both LMU applications. Late submissions will not be accepted.

The language of tuition at the Medical Faculty and the LMU University Hospital is German. In order to ensure good progress in your studies, a sound knowledge of German is essential:

Courses & Lectures

Course Assignment

Assignment to medical courses is based on your preferences and qualifications. Please submit your course preferences via the Medicine application portal.

If you are studying for two semesters:

  • Course selection via the portal applies only to your first semester. If you are staying for a second semester, we will contact you seperately at the given time.
  • Continued LMU registration is required for the second semester (see continuation of registration).

Course Structure

Our curriculum is based on one module per semester (except for Module 23, which spans two semesters). All modules are offered every semester. For more detailed information about our curriculum structure, please click the black square to the right.

You can find an overview of the courses available for Erasmus students here (PDF, 383 KB). When submitting your course preferences, please consider:

  • Select one full module as your priority. If you don't need the full module for credit, you may choose course blocks, but not individual courses.
  • Your selections are binding and cannot be changed later.
  • Final course assignment is handled exclusively by the Dean’s Office. Please do not contact module coordinators or professors.

After Admission

Your timetable can only be activated in the Campusportal after you have enrolled at LMU. Activation takes a few days. Approximately one week before lectures start you can then see the timetable and the courses you have been assigned. For information on lecture times at the LMU Medical Faculty, see "Vorlesungszeiten".

Further Responsibilites

  • Attendance is mandatory for most courses (these are marked red in your timetable).
  • To cancel a course, contact both the International Office and the Dean's Office.
  • Certificates are issued only for tuition assigned by the Dean’s Office.
  • You study in accordance with the LMU examination and study regulations.
  • Examinations are held at the end of each course (up to 2 weeks after lectures end!). To sign up for examinations, please consult the departmental representative after the beginning of lectures. Results (grades and ECTS) appear in your Transcript of Records.
  • Please submit completed logbooks to the corresponding module office after completion of your courses.

Important Notes Concerning Modules

  • Module 23: You may take only full blocks from Part 1 or Part 2 per semester. The Interdisciplinary Courses, classes to deepen expertise and interests across organ blocks, are not dependent on the part taken.
  • Practical training block in Internal medicine & Surgery (M23/o): The practical training blocks are only suitable for students spending a full year at LMU and are held in spring in the period between terms. Please sign up for the course you chose in the wintersemester at the given time ("Buchungszeitraum").
  • Module 5 – Elective Clinical Study Section: If you wish to sign up for this, select course 7M1625 in the application portal. After you have been enrolled and have been given access to the Campusportal, you will be able to book one or more electives online, provided that there are places available and they don't clash with your other courses.
  • History Taking (3 ECTS, Summer Semester): The offer includes interactive lectures, case studies for practicing comprehensive History Taking skills under the direction of experts, and an opportunity to go into the content in greater depth and have discussions with fellow students. It is a virtual course held in English for medical students and students of health professions, which has been developed jointly by lecturers from Munich, Bari and St. Louis. The course runs parallel to the LMU summer semester.

Requesting Multiple Modules

Due to scheduling conflicts and the possibility of losing credit points, taking more than one module per semester is not recommended. LMU cannot guarantee that you will be able to take part in all selected courses should you decide to combine modules.

If you still wish to apply for more than one module:

  • List your priorities in descending order in your application form.
  • Your timetable will be based on your first priority.
  • Other selections are added only if there are no time conflicts.
  • Applications without clear priorities will not be considered.

Please note: Course choices cannot be changed later due to overlaps or full bookings. You may need to update your Learning Agreement During Mobility.

We strongly advise committing to a single module to ensure a smooth enrollment process.

Clinical Internships

Exchange students may apply for full-time clinical internships, provided they:

  • Do not register for any courses in the same semester
  • Have completed at least 3 years of medical school

Assignment to clinical internships is based on your preferences and qualifications. Please submit your rotation preferences via the Medicine application portal and provide the information needed for this purpose.

Please note the following:

  • Please fill out the application form in the Medicine application portal in German and upload your CV in German.
  • Assignment is handled solely by the Dean’s Office.
  • If you are staying for two semesters, please note that continued registration at LMU is required for the second semester (see continuation of registration) and submitted internship details are binding and apply to the entire duration of your stay.
  • Certificates of completion are only issued for internships assigned by the Dean’s Office (Exception: self-arranged clinical electives, see "Famulatur").
  • You are subject to LMU's study and exam regulations.

Internship Options

There are two types of internship you can apply for, depending on the level of training you have reached:

1. MeCuM Elective:

  • For students with solid clinical practice and relevant theoretical knowledge in the discipline concerned
  • Involves clinical rotations and some instruction
  • Requires B2 German

2. PY Elective:

  • For final-year medical students
  • Requires C1 German, clinical competence, and evidence of theoretical knowledge in the discipline concerned
  • Includes clinical rotations and Practical Year coursework

Please note that internship acceptance is limited and determined by academic departments of the LMU University Hospital.

Internship Period

  • Earliest possible start: First day of lectures (for information on lecture times at the Medical Faculty see "Vorlesungszeiten")

To ensure credit at your home university, clearly state the clinical tasks and skills to be acquired in the "Learning Objectives" field.

Please note:

  • ECTS credits are determined by the hospital. As a guideline: 25–30 hours ≈ 1 ECTS.
  • Grades and ECTS (if applicable) are awarded by the hosting hospital.

After acceptance, hospitals will either contact you directly or you will be advised to contact the person responsible. Please note that you are assigned differently from the regular German PY dates, and that there can be delays in the planning as a result.
Meal tickets are provided for the LMU hospital canteen during the internship for MeCuM & PY Elective students.

Clinical electives ("Famulatur")
Exchange students can also arrange clinical electives independently with LMU-affiliated hospitals. For a list of teaching hospitals see:PJ-Einrichtungen der LMU. If you are staying for 2 semesters, we recommend taking clinical electives in the vacation period, parallel to LMU students. If you should take a clinical elective during semester time, please wait until you have your timetable/MeCuM course assignment for the coming semester in order to identify gaps, so that you can then ask the hospital directly about a clinical elective ("Famulatur"), see contact persons. Regarding grades and ECTS points, the same guidelines apply to clinical electives as to MeCuM & PY Elective.

In order to have all the clinical internships certified in the Transcript of Records, please ensure that the Certificate of completion form for your internship is confirmed by the hospital: Certificate of completion of a clinical internship (PDF, 905 KB) (PDF, 905 KB) (please select the type of internship from the drop down list on top of the form: MeCuM Elective or PY Elective or Clinical Elective).

Further Information

Your “Certificate of Arrival and Attendance” (also referred to as a “Certificate of Stay”) will be issued and confirmed by the cross-faculty incoming team of the LMU International Office.

For questions during your studies at LMU or to submit logbooks, please contact the relevant module coordinator:

Module 1: modul1@med.uni-muenchen.de

Module 23: modul23@med.uni-muenchen.de or M23-Logbuch@med.uni-muenchen.de

LMU offers various German courses to help you prepare for and adjust to studying abroad in Munich.

During your stay, additional programs and groups support you both academically and personally to enhance your overall exchange experience, such as MeCuM+.

There is also the Medicine Study Buddy Program, which pairs each incoming Medicine exchange student with a local student from the LMU Medical Faculty who will be able to answer your questions about studying at LMU or living in Munich. The goal is to ease your transition into the curriculum. Participation is strongly recommended, as previous exchange students have found the program extremely helpful.

A Study Buddy Welcome Evening is held every semester during the week before lectures begin and is an ideal opportunity to connect with local LMU medical students.

At the end of your exchange, your academic achievements and clinical internships must be recorded in LSF, LMU’s portal for study and research. Only then can your Transcript of Records be generated.

You must:

  • Enter all the courses you have signed up for (incl. language courses) and the internships you have completed into LSF.
  • Once the MeCuM module results are submitted to the Dean’s Office, they will appear in LSF.
  • Download your transcript and forward it to your home university.
