Project description:
The bone marrow of the skull has recently emerged as a source for CNS immune cells and as a hub for neuro-immunity. Although craniotomy is a standard procedure in neurosurgery our knowledge on skull-related immunology is far from complete. Hence, we have established transgenic mouse line enabling lineage tracing of skull derived cells after skull flap transplantation. We have advanced (micro) surgical techniques for this approach, with a tightly controlled time-course for re-establishing brain physiology, and are now in a position to address basic questions in neuroimmunology. In this project we will determine the specific cell biological identity of skull-derived myeloid cells (SD-M; as compared to other CNS macrophages) and investigate the conditions and migratory trajectories used by SD-M for migration into the brain. The ideal candidate for this position is a self-motivated academic combining strong surgical skills with background knowledge in (molecular) cell biology and experience in basic laboratory methodology (cell culture, PCR).
