International Programs for Students
Exchange Courses in English organized by the International Office in Medicine
In a group of 15, students will present a case study in a standardized „American“ format. The group is guided through each component of the case by the student presenter, who facilitates the discussion.
Leading a case discussion is very different from giving a presentation. When giving a presentation, you engage your audience principally by “telling a story”. When leading a case discussion, you are obliged to interactively pose questions and discuss answers.
The CCD provides an opportunity to learn how to implement the steps of a real-life clinical decision-making process in the context of a small group. It also serves as an advanced preparation for an international elective.
Sessions take place every wednesday of the semester from 19:00-21:00 in a seminar room or lecture hall at Ziemsenstraße.
To sign up for the CCD, please send an e-mail to ccd@med.uni-muenchen.de.
We are thrilled to announce the International Clinical Case Discussion Summer School (ICDSS) from September 30th to October 13, 2024. This two-week intensive course on medical reasoning, organised in collaboration with TU, offers an unparalleled opportunity to develop your clinical reasoning skills while having fun and connecting with other medical students.
If you've already attended regular CCD, get ready for ICDSS, which takes the experience to the next level. Over the course of two weeks, we'll present two cases per day - one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The format is the same as regular CCD, but each case lasts around four hours. Don't worry, though - the pace is more easy-going, and you'll have plenty of opportunities to ask questions and participate in the discussion. We also have group activities planned for the evenings and weekend.
New this year is the retreat to the benedictine monestery Frauenwörth on the Fraueninsel from the 30th of September where we will stay to the 2nd of October to start the course and get to know each other.
We are excited to welcome three guest professors from top US medical schools - WashU, Cornell, and Nagoya University in Japan - as well as local professors from LMU and TU. International students from the US and Japan will also be participating, making this an excellent opportunity to connect with medical students from around the world. In addition this course is completely free.
To apply, please fill out this (https://surveyking.com/w/hu1wikx) linked form (including upload of your CV and a small letter of motivation) by August 15, 2024. While we understand that you may not be able to attend every session, we ask that you only apply if you can attend most of the sessions over the two weeks.
We also need presenters, so please let us know if you'd be interested in presenting a case. As a presenter, you'll work together with a moderator to help choose and prepare a case, but you won't have to lead the discussion.
Lastly, as we are hosting visiting students, we would greatly appreciate it if some of you could host them. Please let us know if you'd be able to take anyone. We cannot express how grateful we would be if you could open your homes and help create this valuable experience for all participants.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to email us at any time. We'll also be hosting an introductory session to discuss the schedule, format, and answer any questions you might have.
We can't wait to see your faces at ICDSS!
The TEI project aims at educational exchange and medical education research, including undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. The TEI group organises an annual GAME-TEI Student Summer School as a student educational exchange programme with a focus on interprofessional education in medicine.
The JOCCD format has established itself as a successful online event format for organising clinical case discussions in an international context since the winter semester 2020. The JOCCD takes place once a year in the winter semester and is organised by Nagoya University.
Further information and dates of the JOCCD 2025 will follow.
Programmes for doctoral students and postdocs
The cooperation enables clinical observerships within the residency program for pharmacists at NYU Langone Hospital (PGY Residency Programs). Doctoral students in the Doctoral Program Clinical Pharmacy are given the opportunity to participate as observers in the residency program of the Department of Pharmacy at NYU Langone Health in New York for four weeks. The Observership provides insight into the interprofessional collaboration of a clinical pharmacist in the therapeutic team on the ward, which has been established for decades. It allows to get to know the workflow and research focus of the clinical pharmacists there and to compare the health care systems and therapeutic approaches. During the stay, the doctoral students work on a scientific question related to their doctoral projects with the background of international comparison. The goal is to bring new ideas to Munich!
More information about the Doctoral Program Clinical Pharmacy can be found here: https://www.en.promo-klinische-pharmazie.med.uni-muenchen.de/index.html

PhD4GAME provides an additional level of support to accelerate the activities of the GAME research projects between the member institutions through joint doctoral training. Each partner university participates in the program and provides two travel grants per year for interested doctoral students, and possibly also for young postdocs.

As a special program by the Chinese Government, the China Scholarship Council (CSC) assigns scholarships for students taking their Ph.D.-programs abroad every year. The LMU has a privileged partnership with the CSC which enables us to recruit highly qualified Chinese post-graduates supported with a scholarship by the Chinese Government.
It is the goal of the LMU-China Scholarship Council-program (LMU-CSC program) to recruit the best-educated Ph.D.-students from China and to sustainably further co-operations in research thereby, especially with our partner institutions within the LMU-China Academic Network (LMU-ChAN).
The Faculty of Medicine is supporting the International Office in selection and placement of qualified Chinese Ph.D.-students in order to reach this goal.
Academic coordinator for the LMU-CSC-program at the Faculty of Medicine is Prof. Dr. Nikolaus Plesnila.
Since the beginning of the program in 2005, the Faculty is supervising the biggest group of the about 40 annual Chinese Ph.D.-students, who are pursuing their doctoral degree at LMU within the LMU-CSC-program in full-time or in certain phases of their doctoral studies (so called Sandwich awardees).
Differences between the LMU-CSC-program and individual applications at CSC:
- Professors offer projects for Ph.D. students (so called ‘Open Positions’) and the International Office at LMU organises the application and communication of these projects.
- Chinese graduates apply centrally at the International Office and are only passed on to potential supervisors after a first formal eligibility check
- After successful placement, the International Office is coordinating the central selection- and application process for the China Scholarship Council
Advantages of the LMU-CSC-program:
- An application via the LMU-CSC-program augments the chances to receive a governmental scholarship by CSC
- It offers a structured framework program:
- Provision of accommodation for the first year of studies
- Airport pick-up upon arrival in Munich
- 4-weeks orientation program, including language course and intercultural training
- Centrally organised poster sessions to present the individual research projects and further each research program
