How to determine the rank of a journal

Articles that are to be part of a cumulative dissertation must be published in a journal that is among the top 80% in its respective field. We would like to show you how to determine the rank of a journal with the help of the Journal Citation Report.

The ranking in the Journal Citation Report

  1. Articles that are to be part of a cumulative dissertation must be published in a journal that is among the top 80% in its field. We would like to show you how to determine the ranking of a journal with the help of the Journal Citation Report.
  2. Allow pop-ups for the website ub.uni-muenchen.de!
  3. Enter the name of the journal (note: journals that are not listed in the InCites Journal Citation Report cannot be part of a cumulative dissertation)
  4. Use the name of the journal and the "Journal Information" displayed to check whether it is the correct journal.
  5. Scroll down to the "Journal's performance" overview in the "Journal Impact Factor" section.
  6. The graphic "Journal Impact Factor Trend (year)" shows you the classification of your journal within one or more categories. The columns in the graph (gray or purple) indicate the impact factor in the respective year. The lines (green, orange, etc.) show you the classification within the respective category for each year. To be in the top 80%, the value for the journal in the year of publication must be higher than 20 in at least one of the categories shown, i.e. better than the lowest 20%.
  7. If the publication was published a long time ago, select the option "view all years" to display a complete overview of all years.

The journal is not listed in the Journal Citation Report, what now?

Journals that are not listed in the InCites Journal Citation Report cannot be part of a cumulative dissertation.
