Medical & Clinician Scientist Program (MCSP)

The MCSP is a structured funding program of the Faculty of Medicine to support young scientists at the LMU University Hospital who are pursuing an academic career and further development in university medicine.

Key players in Translation

© bsa Marketing GmbH für MCSP / LMU

Medical progress requires outstanding young scientists:

  • Researching physicians (clinical scientists) who combine their experience in patient care with basic and clinical research and shape the translation of scientific findings into clinical application,
  • and non-physician scientists in health research (medical scientists) who have an understanding of patient-oriented research and drive forward projects at the interface to the clinic.

The MCSP supports these top performers in medical translation in the establishment and development of an independent scientific career. In this way, the MCSP makes an important contribution to the further development and safeguarding of young scientists in university medicine, as well as to improving the quality of medical research and patient care.

Program Aim and Structure

© bsa Marketing GmbH für MCSP / LMU

The aim of ad personam funding is to support outstanding young scientists at LMU University Hospital in their academic career development and to prepare the next generation of scientists for their future tasks in the best possible way.

The MCSP includes flexibility and security for research - to realize a promising and profile-building research project, to acquire third-party funding and to set up your own working group - as well as individual qualification, intensive support for career development and the opportunity for interdisciplinary networking.

The various funding tracks of the MCSP adress scientifically active physicians with a doctorate in training (Clinician Scientist) and after specialist training (Advanced Clinician Scientist), as well as non-physician scientists in health research (Medical Scientist) at the University Hospital of the LMU Munich.

Clinician Scientist

A physisian's compensation position at the home institution is funded to provide time off from clinical work for research of the applicant. The protected research time (specified as a full-time equivalent in the individual funding tracks) can be planned individually as a full-time, part-time or combination model within the program duration of 36 months.

Medical Scientist

The applicant's position at the LMU Klinikum will be funded full-time for 12 months. The funds can be used as a full-time, part-time or combined model. The duration of the program is linked to the respective model.

A supervisory committee, consisting of a clinical supervisor, a scientific supervisor and optionally a personal mentor, provides guidance and support for career development from different perspectives and with different levels of experience:

  • The supervisors provide helpful contacts or give valuable insights into professional practice. The focus is on professional and career-related exchange. While the clinical supervisor supports clinical milestones, the academic supervisor supports research goals and academic progress.
  • Personal mentoring is non-hierarchical and serves career and personal development. Depending on individual objectives, personal mentors can provide advice, feedback or experience, contacts or key qualifications from the clinical and academic world.
The mentoring committee is put together individually by the program participant and holds regular feedback meetings.

Individual coaching provides program participants with an additional opportunity for independent, short-term process advice or to reflect on professional and personal goals.

The qualification program with a scope of 40 hours per year is determined individually according to the specific needs and career stage of the program participant. The program should be developed together with the supervisory committee and be based on the MCSP curriculum, which is divided into three areas:

  • Scientific continuing education (approx. 16 hours p.a.)
The area of scientific further training includes further training that deepens one's own field of work or increases the diversity of perspectives, promotion of methodology, subject-specific further training lasting several days (retreats), the teaching of scientific content to students, presentation of one's own results at conferences/congresses/symposia or participation in (supraregional) meetings for young scientists as well as special methods (animal protection, safety of genetic methods, Genetic Diagnostics Act, radiation protection, etc.).
  • Continuing medical education (approx. 16 hours p.a.)
Continuing medical education includes, for example, medical and methodological training in clinics, biometrics and epidemiology, statistics, evidence-based medicine, good scientific practice, medical decision-making processes and competencies, ethics in clinical research, specialist training or the investigator qualification.
  • Personal further training (approx. 8 hours p.a.)
The area of career/level-specific key qualifications includes further training courses such as the acquisition of the

Networking is an important aspect of the MCSP. Medical and Clinician Scientists are encouraged to actively seek dialog with their supervisors, mentors, program participants and beyond. Regular networking meetings, workshops and an annual retreat provide opportunities for this.

The career and project goals, a time and task plan for research and clinical work and the qualification program are set out in a target agreement at the start of the funding period.

Feedback meetings with the supervisory committee and an annual interim/final report provide an opportunity to monitor success and, if necessary, correct course.

The Bavarian State Institute for Higher Education Research and Planning (IHF - Bayerisches Staatsinstitut für Hochschulforschung und -planung) accompanies the MCSP funding programs with an external evaluation. Regular online surveys with funding recipients are intended to contribute to the ongoing quality assurance of the programs. Central topics of the survey include the satisfaction of the grantees with the funding elements, adherence to the protected research time, hurdles, career intentions. The contact person at the IHF is Dr. Maike Reimer (Email).

"With the protected research time over a longer period of time, the Clinician Scientist Program has given me the opportunity to realize projects that would otherwise not have been feasible in their depth and scope alongside the clinic. The MCSP therefore offers an excellent basis on which to build your own research group and can help to attract significant extramural third-party funding."

MCSP-Fellow at the Urology Clinic and Polyclinic

Funding Tracks in Detail

The intramural funding of young talent is awarded in a competitive, multi-stage selection process (written application - independent assessment of the application - project presentation in an assessment colloquium).

An application for the intramural funding requires a position (or job confirmation) at the University Hospital of the LMU Munich.

Physicians with a protected research period funded by verified third-party funding or the home institution can be accepted as associated program participants.

The Medical Scientist Track is aimed at non-physician scientists working in health research at the LMU Hospital in the early stages of their careers.

The promotion of young scientists is intended to give them the opportunity to establish their own research project and thus pave the way to independence in academic medicine. Accompanied by a mentoring and qualification program, an application for external funding (third-party funds, scholarships) will be submitted in the near future.

Application Requirements

  • Position (or confirmation of position) as a non-physician research assistant at the University of Munich Hospital
  • Submitted dissertation or max. 2 years after doctorate (excluding parental leave/maternity leave, caring for relatives, second degree, etc.)
  • Proof of scientific activities, e.g. presentations and posters at international/national conferences, (co-)authorship of peer-reviewed publications
  • Motivation to achieve academic independence

Key Data

  • Program goal: academic independence
  • Program duration: depends on the scope of the position (i.e. at least 12 months if full-time or longer if part-time)
  • Thematic focus: open
  • Funding provider: Faculty of Medicine
  • Funding amount: € 100,000 in total, of which up to € 80,000 personnel funds to finance the position for 12 months (full-time equivalent, can be divided flexibly into full and/or part-time) + up to € 20.000,- consumables incl. VAT.
  • Supervision committee: one scientific and one clinical supervisor, optionally (recommended) also a personal mentor

Application

Admission procedure:

  • Written application
  • Review of the application by independent experts

  • In principle, additional third-party funding is welcomed, although double funding must be ruled out.

The MCSP Clincian Scientist Track is aimed at physicians with a doctorate at the LMU Klinikum during their specialist training who are not yet established as scientists.

Application Requirements

  • During specialist training (from the 12th month at the earliest, the specialist examination must not yet have taken place at the time of application)
