Submission of the habilitation thesis

Once all of the stipulated requirements have been met, you can submit your habilitation thesis.

  • Proof of participation in medical didactics qualification programs or courses comprising at least 60 working units of 45 minutes each in accordance with the standard “Certificate in Medical Didactics of Bavarian Universities” at the “basic level.”
  • Participation in academic courses in the subject area for which you are seeking teaching certification (scope: at least 4 semesters of two SWS each). Please organize the list of your courses by semester and number of hours.
  • Results of your personal teaching evaluations (scope: at least 20 hours of 45 minutes each)

We recommend that you visit the website of the Institute for Didactics and Educational Research in Medicine (DAM) at an early stage to find out about the content and formal requirements and to obtain the necessary certificates.

  • At the time of submitting your habilitation thesis, you should have 15 publications in journals listed in Medline/PubMed (as a generally accepted rule, these should be original research papers),
  • more than half of which should be as first or last author.
  • Publications that have already been used to obtain another academic degree (such as M.Sc., dissertation, Ph.D., etc.) cannot be taken into account.

Your list of publications should be structured in the same way as your application:

  • Please structure your list of publications into the following sections:
    1. Original research papers with first or last authorship (only articles listed in Medline/PubMed)
    2. Original research papers with co-authorship (only articles listed in Medline/PubMed)
    3. Case Reports (only articles listed in Medline/PubMed)
    4. Reviews articles (only articles listed in Medline/PubMed)
    5. Book chapters
    6. Other publications (e.g., letters to the editor)
  • For manuscripts that have been accepted for publication or are in press, please include the confirmation of acceptance.
  • Please list the publications in each section chronologically, starting with the most recent publication
  • For each publication, please indicate the impact factor of the journal for the year of publication. If the IF is not yet known, please indicate the IF for the previous year.
  • Highlight your name in bold

  1. Updated tabular curriculum vitae (in German) with particular emphasis on academic career
  2. Signed affidavit (DOCX, 30 KB) that the written habilitation thesis was written independently and that the origin of any material used or cited has been properly identified.
  3. Signed confirmation of congruency (DOCX, 30 KB) declaring, that the submitted thesis, is congruent with the printed version both in content and format.
  4. Declaration (DOCX, 72 KB) that you have not already completed two unsuccessful habilitation proceedings in the same subject, that no academic degree has been revoked from you, and that no proceedings are pending against you that could result in the revocation of an academic degree.

Your habilitation thesis will be reviewed by your three academic mentors and two external reviewers.

Please recommend at least two external reviewers who have relevant expertise in your field.

Potential external reviewers must meet the following requirements:

  • They must be impartial.
  • They must be university teachers (university professors, adjunct professors or private lecturers; they may already be retired or no longer teaching).

The final selection of reviewers will be done by the academic mentors.

  • Your written habilitation thesis demonstrates your ability to conduct independent academic work. The habilitation thesis must make a significant contribution to research.

Cumulative habilitation theses

  • You have the option of writing a cumulative habilitation thesis based on your scientific publications.
  • Precede your publications with an introductory summary explaining the significance of your work for the field.
  • Your academic mentors may also approve foreign-language works if they unanimously agree to do so.

Monographic habilitation thesis

  • Alternatively, you have the option of submitting a monographic habilitation thesis.
  • Please note that the requirements for your publication record remain unaffected by this.

Cover page
The following information should be included on the cover page:

  • The name of the clinic or institute where the thesis was conducted.
  • The director of the institute.
  • The title of your postdoctoral thesis.
  • The subject for which you are seeking teaching certification.
  • Your title and name.
  • The year in which you are submitting your thesis.

Please submit:

  • Printed version of your habilitation thesis (one copy) DIN A4 bound (adhesive binding, no ring binding!)
  • Electronic version of your habilitation thesis (as a PDF file)

How to submit your documents:

Please note: We have simplified the procedure for submitting your documents! You will only have to submit the electronic version and one paper copy of your documents!

Please send us all the documents in advance by email to habilitation@dek.med.uni-muenchen.de (via Databox orSync+Share).

  • Your electronically submitted documents will be reviewed by the Habilitation Office. You will be informed promptly whether your documents are complete.
  • Once all documents are complete, please send a printed version of all documents in single copy and without plastic sleeves.
  • Important: Please do not print out the results of personal teaching evaluations and publications! Electronic submission is sufficient.

  • send by post to: HAP-Büro, Dekanat Medizinische Fakultät Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München Bavariaring 19, 80336 München (please divide your documents into several letters if one envelope is too thick for a regular mailbox slot; packages are often not delivered securely), or
  • drop them in the mailbox at the Dean's Office, to the right of the entrance at the garden gate (please divide your documents into several envelopes if one envelope is too thick for a regular mailbox slot), or
  • deliver them in person by appointment (phone: (089) 4400-58906, Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., email: habilitation@dek.med.uni-muenchen.de)
