Professor Superti-Furga, Scientific Director of the Research Center for Molecular Medicine (CeMM) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and Professor of Medical Systems Biology at the Medical University of Vienna, gave a talk on 28th October 2025 on “Membrane transporters as mediators of physiology across cells and ecosystems.”
In his lecture, Professor Superti-Furga offered a compelling overview of membrane transporters - proteins that regulate the movement of molecules between cells and their environment. Despite their central role in physiology and their potential importance for medicine and drug discovery, these molecular gatekeepers remain surprisingly underexplored. He argued for a more systematic study of their functions, not only to advance our understanding of cellular life but also to illuminate how biological systems interact within larger ecosystems.
Beyond his current research, he has made landmark contributions to biomedical science, including the elucidation of tyrosine kinase regulation in human cancers, the identification of molecular mechanisms of several drugs, and the discovery of fundamental principles governing the proteome and lipidome. Appointed Chair of EU-LIFE in January 2024, he continues to be a prominent voice for excellence and collaboration in European research.
