The workshop at the BMC supports scientists in the planning, design and construction of mechanical and electronic devices and experimental setups. The spectrum ranges from simple turned or milled parts to precision work, for example in the context of high-resolution microscopy. From the initial idea, through the preparation of sketches and models through to implementation: the workshop staff are available to provide advice and assistance throughout the project.

Almost all materials can be machined, but the focus is on metals and plastics. In addition to conventional lathes and milling machines and a CNC-controlled vertical milling machine, there are also sheet metal processing machines and a 3D printer.

With its repair service, the research workshop makes an important contribution to sustainability and the conservation of resources. Broken equipment and components are repaired instead of being thrown away.

The BMC research workshop also provides training: future precision mechanics learn their trade here.
