AG Wolf

Prof. Dr. med. vet. Eckhard Wolf

Affiliation: Gene Center and Department of Biochemistry
Molecular Animal Breeding and Biotechnology, LMU Munich

Research Focus:
Prof. Wolf leads research in molecular animal genetics and translational biomedical modeling. His group develops genetically engineered pig models for human diseases such as diabetes, heart failure, and lipid disorders. These models are designed to replicate key physiological and pathophysiological features of complex human diseases.

Role in ICON:
Prof. Wolf is a central figure in ICON's research on endocrine and metabolic dysfunction, vascular disease mechanisms, and heart failure. His team generates and characterizes large animal models that form the preclinical foundation for many translational research projects within ICON. He also oversees the Munich MIDY Pig Biobank and supports integration with imaging, omics, and interventional platforms.

Key Areas of Work:

  • Genetically tailored porcine disease models
  • Preclinical xenotransplantation and islet cell biology
  • Multi-organ metabolic and cardiovascular phenotyping
  • Functional genomics and regenerative medicine

Techniques & Infrastructure:

  • CRISPR/Cas-based gene editing
  • Biobanking, histopathology, and omics workflows
  • SPF housing and surgical animal platforms
