AG Massberg

Prof. Dr. med. Steffen Massberg
Affiliation: University Hospital LMU Munich, Department of Medicine I – Cardiology

Research Focus:
Prof. Massberg's research centers on vascular immunology and thrombosis, particularly the interactions between immune cells and platelets in cardiovascular diseases. His work has elucidated mechanisms of immune cell migration and the role of platelets in inflammation and thrombosis.

Role in ICONLMU:
As a co-director of ICON, Prof. Massberg contributes to all three research areas, focusing on vascular inflammation, immune thrombosis, and the development of anti-thrombotic therapies. His group leads studies on thrombo-inflammatory diseases and collaborates on preclinical intervention trials using large animal models.

Key Areas of Work:

  • Platelet–immune interactions in atherothrombosis
  • Mechanisms of arterial and venous thrombosis
  • Immune-regulated thrombus formation and resolution

Techniques & Infrastructure:

  • Flow cytometry, confocal & multiphoton microscopy
  • Advanced vascular imaging
  • Mouse and pig models of myocardial infarction and stroke
