Short Term Clinical Internships

Mainly targeted towards students from our non-european partners.

Visiting Student Elective Program

This program provides an opportunity for international medical students to undertake clinical rotations at LMU Munich, facilitated by the International Exchange Office of Medicine.
International undergraduate students who have completed a minimum of 3 years of a medical degree program are welcome to apply. Prospective applicants who have already graduated from medical school are not eligible to participate.
Please note that applicants are accepted by the academic clinical divisions of the LMU University Hospital Munich on a limited basis. Priority in scheduling electives is given to students from LMU partner universities. Program length is between four to twelve weeks.

Please note: Due to the currently high number of applicants from partner universities we anticipate that we will not be able to accept non-partner students in the foreseeable future.
Furthermore, we kindly ask students from partner universities who have not yet been nominated at LMU by their university to contact their International Office first and look into the possibility of a nomination via our exchange programs.

Application Process

⇢ 8 months before elective start Application

All students who wish to visit the LMU University Hospital for a clinical elective need to apply no later than 8 months before the requested start date using the Visiting Student Application Service.

All applicants can only specify one clinical field.

Documents to be submitted:

  1. Curriculum vitae (CV), listing education, publications and other professional accomplishments.
  2. Statement of intent, describing your career goals and how the experience of an elective at LMU will help you achieve them.
  3. Proof of Enrolment in English, on home university letterhead including:

    – medical studies start and expected graduation dates
  4. Transcript of Records, documenting your studies at your home university.
  5. Copy of passport or identity card (page with personal data)
  6. German language skills:
The Elective Program is taught in German, i.e. without a good knowledge of German, you will draw only limited benefit from this guest visit.
Therefore, students from non-partner universities must furnish evidence of at least German level B2 according to the European Framework of Reference. German language skills on an even higher level will considerably improve your chances of being accepted for this group of applicants!
As the very minimum, all Visiting Students must have a very good knowledge of English. Evidence of English level B2 is furnished (except in the case of native speakers) using the LMU Confirmation of Language Skills form.
  7. Visiting Student Immunization Record (Medical certificate) and (only in case of an internship in Pediatrics) Certificate of Good Conduct: see Step 3

You must submit proof before you can begin your elective, so schedule accordingly.

Approval of the Federal Employment Agency

Internships in Germany relating to a degree course, even in the context of the Visiting Student Elective Program, require the approval of the Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit). LMU will obtain this approval for you.

Exception: You are a national of a Member State of the EU or one of the following countries: Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, Switzerland.

The following documents are needed for this purpose, which you hand in with your online application:

  1. Declaration of Certificate of Enrolment, to be filled in by your home university.
    Help when filling in:
    Course of study
    Item 10: "Medicine"
Item 11: Duration of the Medical Degree Program
Please put a cross in the bottom part of the form indicating that approval is being sought for an internship relating to a degree course and answer questions 16 to 18.
  2. Consent to having a copy of your passport uploaded

Here you declare that you consent to having the scan or picture of your passport transmitted. Note: Alternatively, you can send a copy of your passport to the Employment Agency by post. Please let us know if you decide on this alternative.
  3. Evidence that the intern can support himself/herself independently

For this purpose, please submit the relevant undertaking, i.e. the guarantee provided to the Federal Employment Agency by a third party on your behalf.
