A semester abroad at LMU Faculty of Medicine

For Erasmus students; prospective applicants who have already graduated from medical school are not eligible to participate.

I. Courses & Lectures

Our curriculum is based on one module per semester (except for Module 23: extends over two semesters). All modules are offered every semester.

Course Selection Process

When choosing courses, please select a module according to your personal priority. If you do not need the complete module for credit purposes, you may also select only individual course blocks from it, but not single courses.
The details you provide are binding, subsequent changes in the portal cannot be taken into consideration. After admission, please look at the information for medical students in the application portal.

  • General note: Attendance is required for most courses - they show up red in your curriculum.
  • Note on Module 23: In any one semester, only complete blocks from Part 1 or Part 2 can be taken. The Interdisciplinary Courses, classes to deepen expertise and interests across organ blocks, are not dependent on the part taken.
  • Note on Practical training block in Internal medicine & Surgery (M23/o): The practical training blocks are only suitable for students spending a full year at LMU and take place in spring in the period between terms. Please sign up for the course chosen for the Summer Semester.
  • Note on Module 5 – Compulsory Elective Seminar: Outpatient medicine & Elective Clinical Study Section: If you wish to sign up for this, please first check the box by the courses 7M3410/7M3604 & 7M1625 in the list of course selections. After you have been enrolled and have been given access to the Campusportal, you will be able to book one or more electives online, provided that there are places available.
  • Note on History Taking (3 ECTS, Summer Semester): The offer includes interactive lectures, case studies for practicing comprehensive History Taking skills under the direction of experts, and an opportunity to go into the content in greater depth and have discussions with fellow students. It is a virtual course held in English for medical students and students of health professions, which has been developed jointly by lecturers from Munich, Bari and St. Louis. The course runs parallel to the LMU summer semester.

Requesting several modules in one semester:
According to the MeCuM logic, it is only possible to take one module per semester without any clashes and without any loss of points.
In the past, requests to combine different modules in one semester were only successful in a few cases. It is unfortunately not possible to say in advance whether individual subjects from different modules can be combined in any particular semester. This depends on whether suitable places are available after regular places have been allocated.
Should you still want to combine two or more modules: Please indicate the subject (or group of subjects in descending order) which is most important for you to take and prioritize in your application form. The first priority determines the structure of your timetable, all following priorities will be booked as long as there are no time conflicts. It is essential to state a subject as your priority. Otherwise, your application cannot be considered.
Please also bear in mind: It is not possible to change your choice of courses retroactively, i.e. in the event of conflicts (overlapping times or courses already fully booked) you will need to amend your Learning Agreement During Mobility.
We therefore strongly recommend that you commit to one particular module in order to make the planning process more secure. LMU cannot guarantee that you will be able to take part in all selected courses should you decide to combine modules.

II. Clinical Internships

In principle, exchange students at LMU can be assigned for full-time clinical internships, provided that they do not sign up for any courses/lectures in the semester concerned and that they have completed a minimum of 3 years of a medical degree program.
There are two types of internship, which depend on the level of training reached; proof of language skills has to be submitted with the application:

  • MeCuM Elective:
This internship is intended for students who already have sound competences in clinical practice and, wherever possible, also have theoretical knowledge in the discipline concerned. It involves clinical rotations and some tuition. A German Level of B2 is required.
  • PY Elective:
This internship is reserved for students in the final year of their medical studies. Further requirements are a knowledge of German on the C1 level, sound competences in clinical practice and evidence of theoretical knowledge in the discipline concerned. In addition to clinical rotations, students attend the courses and lectures intended for the Practical Year (PY).

  • Please note that applicants are accepted by the academic clinical divisions of the LMU University Hospital Munich on a limited basis.
  • You can apply either for the MeCuM Elective or for the PY Elective – depending on the level of training you have reached.
  • The earliest possible starting date for clinical internships is the first day of lectures in a semester. For information on lecture times at the Medical Faculty see "Vorlesungszeiten". The latest finishing date is the last day of the semester, i.e. 31st March or 30th September.
  • The minimum duration for a subject is 4 weeks.
  • The following subjects can be selected:

  1. Anesthesia
  2. Dermatology
  3. ENT
  4. Forensic medicine
  5. General medicine
  6. General surgery: In the field of surgery, rotations in the various sub-disciplines are possible (visceral, trauma, transplantation, thoracic, vascular, cardiac surgery)
  7. Gynecology
  8. Internal medicine: The Internal medicine disciplines are grouped into three sectors.
    Block I: Cardiology, Nephrology, Angiology
Block II: Gastroenterology, Endocrinology/Diabetology, Internal intensive care and Respiratory medicine, Infectiology
Block III: Pneumology, Hematology and oncology, Rheumatology, Geriatric medicine
  9. Laboratory medicine
  10. Neurology
  11. Neuropathology
  12. Neurosurgery
  13. Nuclear medicine
  14. Occupational and environmental medicine
  15. Ophthalmology
  16. Oral and maxillofacial surgery
  17. Orthopedics
  18. Pathology
  19. Pediatric and adolescent psychiatry
  20. Pediatric surgery
  21. Pediatrics
  22. Physical medicine
  23. Plastic surgery
  24. Psychiatry
  25. Psychosomatic medicine
  26. Radiology
  27. Radiotherapy/Radiation oncology
  28. Urology

In order to improve your chances of a full allocation of time at LMU, please indicate for each subject requested not only the duration, time frame and learning objectives, but also alternative subjects (e.g. Child psychiatry instead of Pediatrics). For assignment in General surgery and Internal medicine, please specify the sub-discipline/s.

  • In order to ensure that your work is credited at your home university, please show in the "learning objectives" box what clinical activities are to be performed in the course of the internship and what skills are to be learned.
  • For both types of internship, the grade and ECTS points are, where necessary, awarded by the hospital concerned. With regard to ECTS, there is no fixed number of points for clinical internships at LMU. 25–30 internship hours will usually correspond to 1 ECTS point.

After being accepted for clinical internships at LMU, you will receive further information from the hospitals involved directly, or you will be advised to contact the person responsible (PDF, 330 KB). Please note that you are assigned differently from the regular PY dates, and that there can be delays in the planning as a result.
MeCuM & PY Elective students receive meal tickets for the LMU hospital canteen for the whole period of the internship.

Clinical electives ("Famulatur")
In addition to MeCuM courses and lectures, clinical internships can be taken in the form of clinical electives. These must be agreed with the hospital concerned by the exchange students themselves. For a list of teaching hospitals see: PJ-Einrichtungen. If you are staying for 2 semesters, we recommend taking clinical electives in the vacation period, like LMU students. If you should take a clinical elective during semester time, please wait until you have your timetable/MeCuM course assignment for the coming semester in order to identify gaps, so that you can then ask the hospital directly about a clinical elective ("Famulatur"), see Contact persons. Regarding grades and ECTS points, the same guidelines apply to clinical electives as to MeCuM & PY Elective.

In order to have all the clinical internships certified in the Transcript of Records, please ensure that the Certificate of completion form for your internship is confirmed by the hospital concerned: Certificate of completion of a clinical internship (PDF, 905 KB) (please fill out the first drop down menue with either MeCum-Elective OR PY Elective OR Clinical Elective)

III. Registration Process for Courses & Lectures and Clinical Internships

  • You need to be nominated at LMU by your home university.
  • The deadline for the complete LMU exchange applications is 15th May or 15th November, for the following semester in each case.
  • That includes submitting both online applications for an exchange visit in Medicine at the Erasmus-Incoming office at LMU and at the Faculty of Medicine.

Once your list of course choices has been received and your placement has been approved, the Dean’s Office will prepare your timetable for the coming semester.

Please note the following:

  • German proficiency at at least B2 level is required at time of application. For clinical internships, official evidence of language skills (Goethe-Zertifikat, TestDaF, etc.) is required; the LMU Confirmation of Language Skills form is not sufficient as evidence.
  • The course/internship choices you make are binding.
  • The final assignment is the sole responsibility of the Dean’s Office. Please do not contact the modules or teachers for course assignment.
  • If you wish to cancel a course/internship, please contact the International Office and the Dean's Office.
  • Certificates will only be issued for tuition assigned by the Dean’s office. (Exception: clinical electives arranged on your own initiative, see "Famulatur")
  • You study in accordance with the LMU examination and study regulations.
  • The relevant examinations are held at the end of the courses, up to two weeks after the end of lectures. To sign up for examinations, please consult the departmental representative after the beginning of lectures.
  • The results of the examinations are certified in the transcript of records accordingly (grade and ECTS credits).
  • Please make sure to hand in the log books to the corresponding module after completion of your courses.

For Courses & Lectures: Your timetable can only be activated in the Campusportal after you have enrolled at LMU. Activation takes a few days. Approximately one week before lectures start you can then see the timetable and the courses to which you have been assigned. Information on lecture times can be found at: "Vorlesungszeiten"

FAQ

Exchange students are able to attend some of the courses and lectures in the clinical semesters or clinical internships. The language of tuition at the Medical Faculty and the LMU University Hospital is German. In order to ensure good progress in your studies, a sound knowledge of German is essential:

  • at least level C1 for PY Elective
  • at least level B2 for MeCuM Elective

The Confirmation of Language Skills (PDF, 88 KB) form can only be used if your level of German has been checked in the course of the selection procedure at your home university or if you have attended lectures in German at your home university. Otherwise, an official certificate is required for courses & lectures. For clinical internships an official certificate has to be submitted as a matter of principle.
Please note that the required language certificate must be handed in with all other documents during the application process and cannot be submitted after the application deadline.

Only applications from students nominated by their home universities will be considered.

The deadline for the complete exchange program application is 15th May or 15th November, for the following semester in each case.
That includes submitting the list of courses chosen or, where applicable, the application for an internship.
Please take note of the information on the choice of courses and the requirements for internships.

  • Please let us know the subjects or rotations you would prefer, so that we can assign you appropriately.
  • Please use the Medicine application portal and provide the information needed for your assignment. This must be done no later than 15th May for the winter semester or 15th November for the summer semester and is in addition to the LMU application for exchange students for their matriculation.
  • If you are staying for two semesters:
The selection of courses via the application portal for Medicine only applies to the first exchange semester. You will be asked in good time for your preferences for any courses you wish to take in the second semester, for which a separate form will be sent. It is dependent on your continuation of registration.
The details for clinical internships apply to the entire duration of your stay at LMU.
  • For assignment to clinical internships: Please fill in the form in German and upload your CV which must also be written in German. The learning objectives you specify are used by the hospital lecturers to find the best possible match for you.
  • All Medicine exchange students must supply proof of sufficient immunity to measles. Otherwise, you will not be allowed to start your exchange studies.
Please use the following template or equivalent: Certificate of complete protection against measles (PDF, 336 KB) have the form completed and signed by your GP or the university medical facility at your home university and submit it in your Medicine Online application.

As soon as you have provided these details, we can begin processing your application. Applications are checked by the Dean's Office of the Medical Faculty and the relevant LMU hospitals.

Learning Agreement

In the Learning Agreement, you indicate which courses or clinical internships you intend to take at LMU. Before submitting your application, please discuss the choice of courses and the credits with your home university in good time.

Please send in the Learning Agreement Before Mobility together with your general LMU exchange application; it is not part of the Medicine Online application. Only after you have been admitted the International Office for Medicine will confirm your Learning Agreement and make it available to you for downloading via the Medical Faculty’s application portal. Please note: LMU cannot guarantee that you will be able to take part in all selected internships. Should a place not be available in the hospital, adjustments to your Learning Agreement might be necessary after your arrival. After matriculating at LMU, students who have selected courses & lectures will be able to see their timetable in the Medical Faculty’s Campus Portal about a week before the beginning of lectures.

Students who applied for internships are notified by e-mail of the next steps.

Changes to Learning Agreement

Please first have the International Office for Medicine confirm any changes and then submit them to your home university as well for confirmation.

With regard to your Learning Agreement, please note that it can only be changed, if necessary, during your mobility, not before the beginning of lectures. The dates for the beginning and end of lectures are fixed, and you can see them on our website under: "Vorlesungszeiten"

We offer a variety of German courses to prepare you for your studies abroad at LMU.

Also while you are studying in Munich there are various courses, programs and groups to provide support and help you to benefit as much as possible from your exchange semester, both medically and personally, and also to have a good time: MeCuM+

The Medicine Study Buddy Program is designed for international students participating in the Medicine exchange programs. The aim of the program is to make the transition for exchange students into our curriculum as smooth as possible. Therefore, we match every incoming student with a student of our Faculty. We recommend that you take part in the Study Buddy Program. The experience of former exchange students has shown that buddies are a great help. They will be able to answer questions that you may have about studying at LMU or living in Munich.

Your first days in the Medical Faculty are made smoother by the Study Buddy welcoming evening. This is held every semester in the week before the beginning of lectures. It is the perfect framework for establishing contacts with LMU’s Medicine students.

At the end of each semester, your academic achievements or clinical internships must be registered in the LSF portal for studies, education and research so that your final Transcript of Records can be issued when you have completed your exchange stay at LMU.

For this, exchange students first enter the courses they have signed up for (incl. language courses) and the internships they have taken in LSF.

When the results of the MeCuM modules have been sent to the Dean's Office of the Medical Faculty, they appear in LSF. The finished transcript has to be downloaded by the exchange student and forwarded to his/her home university.

Here you find the instructions (PDF, 206 KB)on how to use LSF and get your transcript of records.

The "Certificates of Arrival and Attendance", also called the "Certificate of Stay", will be confirmed for you by the cross-faculty incoming team of the LMU International Office.
