Visitors were able to choose a diverse range of activities: The laboratory tours provided an insight into complex biomedical research and everyday lab life. Some visitors may have discovered their scientific talent in small biochemical and physiological experiments. At interactive information stands and in short presentations, researchers reported on topics such as how the immune system works when recognising germs, the possibility of curing Alzheimer's, the importance of twin studies for autoimmune diseases and the use of CRISPR gene scissors. Visitors also received information about the various professional fields related to research as well as about the Martinsried campus and the initiatives at the BMC.
The youngest researchers were also welcome! The small Kids Lab invited children aged 6-10 to discover the world of science through hands on experiments. A varied programme with children's cinema, crafts and painting also awaited the young guests.
After the Open House could not take place in previous years due to the coronavirus pandemic, the BMC employees were particularly looking forward to the personal dialogue with interested citizens. Prof. Peter Becker, spokesman for the BMC Board of Directors, emphasised his aspiration "to gain the trust of our fellow citizens, especially those who live locally in the vicinity of the BMC. We want to show that people can talk to us, that we have nothing to hide and that we are always happy to explain our findings."
The feedback from visitors was very positive. A brief survey during the event revealed that 90% of participants were extremely satisfied. The enormous rush of visitors was also reflected in the fact that all pre-registration offers were quickly fully booked. These included the guided tour as well as experiments and the Kids Lab.
