On 02.07.2024, a delegation from Stellenbosch University, South Africa, visited the Faculty of Medicine at LMU Munich. The guests included the Vice-Chancellor and Rector Prof. Wim de Villiers, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Strategy, Global and Corporate Affairs Prof. Hester Klopper and the Director of International Affairs Robert Kotzé.
The two-day visit included meetings with Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Bernd Huber, President of LMU Munich, and Prof. Dr. Francesca Biagini, Vice President for International Affairs and Diversity. There was also a visit to the High Tech Campus Garching and meetings at the Faculty of Medicine. The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Thomas Gudermann, welcomed the visit to the Dean's Office.
The aim of the delegation's visit was to establish the University of Stellenbosch as a further strategic partner university of LMU. The meeting at the Dean's Office focused on identifying potential for institutional cooperation in the field of medicine.
With a total of 43,000 students and ten faculties, the University of Stellenbosch has an important medical faculty with around 5,000 students. The medical training there extends over six years, followed by a two-year clinical internship and a further year in general medicine. The student exchange could represent a concrete first point of contact in the institutional cooperation between the two faculties. In this context, the University of Stellenbosch offers excellent internship opportunities in rural regions, which could be of great interest to students.
Promising opportunities for cooperation were identified in the area of research, particularly in the context of health services research. This could build on an already completed BMBF-funded project of the African-German Health Research Network on Evidence-Based Public Health (CEBHA+), in which the Institute of Biometry and Epidemiology/Chair of Public Health (Prof. Eva Rehfuess) was involved. The University of Stellenbosch also focuses on postgraduate teaching and interdisciplinary education, particularly in the fields of information technology, climate research and agricultural sciences.
LMU Medicine would like to thank the delegation from Stellenbosch University for their visit and looks forward to a successful and long-term institutional cooperation!
