AI in Medicine—A Look Ten Years into the Future

Artificial intelligence is also transforming medicine. But how will this directly affect patients in the coming years? A project by M1 – Munich Medicine Alliance takes a look into the future. Using fictional medical case histories, experts describe what prevention, diagnosis, and treatment might look like in 2036. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space (BMFTR) as part of the Science Year 2026 – Medicine of the Future.

The digital platform is now available at https://gesund-mit-ki.de/. Users will find specific everyday scenarios from five stages of life. How will smart wearables help Clara, 34, and her unborn child navigate her pregnancy in 2036? How will AI help diagnose the rare disease affecting 16-year-old Lena? How will AI save 55-year-old Sebastian’s life after a stroke? How will assistive robots support elderly people in need of care ten years from now?

Each of the stories is based on the expertise of researchers at LMU, the Technical University of Munich (TUM), and Helmholtz Munich. The stories are always grounded in the current state of research. In addition to the specific case studies, the researchers also address broader questions such as “Will sick people be screened out before birth in the future?” or “How will medications be developed in the future?” Over the coming weeks, the content on the site will be continuously updated.

Content Developed Through Dialogue

One unique feature of the platform is that many of the topics were developed in advance through workshops with interested participants. The stated goal is to help the general public understand the potential, limitations, and impacts of AI applications. The project has already been presented at the “Festival of the Future,” and additional public events are planned.
