International exchange programs

Information for medical students at a university abroad who wish to visit LMU for an international mobility.
International programs for students
Each week, a group of 15 students engages in an interactive clinical case discussion using a standardized American-style case format. One student presents the case and guides the group through each component, encouraging active participation and moderating the discussion.
Leading a case discussion is not the same as giving a presentation. While presentations often involve telling a story to an audience, case discussions require dynamic interaction by asking questions, exploring possible answers, and reasoning through clinical decisions together.
CCD sessions offer a valuable opportunity to practice real-world clinical decision-making in a collaborative, small-group environment. They also serve as excellent preparation for international electives, where similar discussion formats are common.
When: Wednesdays, 19:00–21:00 (during the semester)
Where: Seminar room or lecture hall at Ziemsenstraße
Registration: To participate, please email ccd@med.uni-muenchen.de
Innovative, international teaching formats run by the International Office for Medicine at LMU
Since the winter semester of 2020, the JOCCD (Joint Online Clinical Case Discussions) has become a well-established and successful virtual event for conducting clinical case discussions in an international setting. Held once a year during the winter semester, the JOCCD is organized by Nagoya University and brings together students from around the world.
Further information and dates for JOCCD 2025 will be announced soon.
The TEI (Transnational Educational Initiative) project promotes international exchange and collaborative research in the field of medical education, with a focus on both undergraduate and postgraduate training.
As part of its activities, the TEI group organizes the annual GAME-TEI Student Summer School, an international exchange program designed for medical students. The program emphasizes interprofessional medical education.

We are excited to announce the International Clinical Case Discussion Summer School (ICDSS), which will take place from September 30 to October 13, 2024. This two-week intensive course in clinical reasoning is organized in collaboration with TU München and offers a unique opportunity to strengthen your diagnostic skills while connecting with medical students from around the world.
If you have previously taken part in the regular Clinical Case Discussions (CCD), this is your chance to expand on that experience. During ICDSS, we will explore two cases each day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Each session lasts around four hours and follows the familiar CCD format. The schedule is relaxed and gives everyone plenty of time to ask questions and take part in thoughtful discussion.
In addition to academic sessions, we have planned social and group activities in the evenings and over the weekend to help participants build lasting connections.
New in 2024: Frauenwörth Retreat
The course will begin with a retreat at the Benedictine Monastery on Fraueninsel, from September 30 to October 2. This beautiful setting offers a chance to get to know each other and a great start to the course.
International Guests and Students
We are proud to welcome guest professors from Washington University in St. Louis, Cornell University, and Nagoya University in Japan, along with faculty members from LMU and TU München. Students from the United States and Japan will also be joining, making this a truly international learning experience.
Participation in this course is completely free of charge.
Application deadline: August 15, 2024
Apply here: https://surveyking.com/w/hu1wikx
Please complete the application form and upload your CV and a short letter of motivation. While we understand that full attendance may not be possible, we kindly ask you to apply only if you can take part in most sessions over the two-week period.
Additional Opportunities
- Case Presenters Needed: If you would like to present a case, please let us know. You will work with a moderator to select and prepare the case. You will not be expected to lead the discussion on your own.
- Host a Student: We are looking for volunteers to host international students during the course. If you are able to host someone, we would be sincerely grateful for your support in making this exchange possible.
Questions?
If you have any questions, feel free to contact us by email. We will also organize an introductory session where we will explain the format, go over the schedule, and answer any questions you may have.
We are looking forward to seeing you at ICDSS 2024!
Programs for doctoral students and postdocs
This cooperation between LMU and NYU Langone Health offers doctoral students in the Clinical Pharmacy program the opportunity to take part in a four-week clinical observership within the Pharmacy Residency Program (PGY) at NYU Langone Hospital in New York.
Participants observe the day-to-day work of clinical pharmacists who are fully integrated into interprofessional care teams on hospital wards. This observership provides valuable insights into the well-established role of clinical pharmacists in patient care and highlights how pharmacists contribute to therapeutic decision-making.
Students will become familiar with the clinical workflows and research priorities of pharmacists at NYU Langone. The experience also allows for comparison between healthcare systems and therapeutic strategies in the United States and Germany.
During their stay, participating doctoral students will explore a scientific question that connects with their doctoral research. The goal is to integrate international perspectives and bring fresh ideas back to Munich.

PhD4GAME offers an additional level of support to advance collaborative research activities within the GAME network. The program focuses on joint doctoral training to strengthen partnerships between institutions and foster high-quality research in medical education.
Each partner university takes part in the program and provides two travel grants per year for interested PhD students. Early career postdoctoral researchers may also be eligible, depending on availability.

欢迎来到 慕尼黑大学(LMU) - 中国国家留学基金委(CSC)博士生奖学金项目! 在此页面上,您将找到有关在LMU-CSC项目框架内如何申请慕尼黑大学医学系的博士学习的更多信息
As part of a special program of the Chinese government, the China Scholarship Council (CSC) awards annual scholarships for doctoral students abroad. Since 2005, LMU has maintained a privileged partnership with the CSC, which allows LMU to welcome outstanding Chinese postgraduates through CSC scholarships.
The goal of the LMU-CSC program is to recruit the best-qualified doctoral students from China and to sustainably promote research cooperation, particularly with universities that are part of the LMU–China Academic Network (LMU–ChAN).
To support this mission, the Faculty of Medicine assists with the selection and placement of suitable Chinese doctoral candidates. This process is carried out in close cooperation with the Department of International Affairs and faculty members involved in LMU–ChAN activities.
The academic coordinator for the Faculty of Medicine in the LMU–CSC Program is Professor Dr. Nikolaus Plesnila.
Since the start of the program in 2005, the Faculty of Medicine has hosted the largest share of the 40 Chinese doctoral students participating in the LMU–CSC Program. These students complete their doctorates either entirely at LMU or partially through short-term research stays (so-called sandwich scholarship holders), depending on their scholarship type.
Key Differences Between the LMU–CSC Program and Individual CSC Applications
- Professors at LMU offer doctoral positions with defined research topics, also known as “open positions.” The LMU Department of International Affairs manages the application process and the communication of these opportunities.
- Chinese graduates apply centrally to the LMU Department of International Affairs. Applications are screened formally before they are shared with potential supervisors.
- After successful placement, the Department of International Affairs guides applicants through the official CSC selection and application process.
Advantages of the LMU–CSC Program
- Increased chances of receiving a government scholarship from the CSC
- Intercultural guidance and counseling
- Structured framework program for doctoral students, including:
- Procurement of housing for the first year of study
- Airport transfer upon arrival in Munich
- A four-week orientation program that includes a language course and intercultural training
- Poster sessions organized by LMU to showcase student research projects
Application Process
Since the winter semester 2021/22, the Faculty of Medicine has primarily offered doctoral positions that include detailed project descriptions (so-called 'open positions') for Chinese applicants. These positions are available for:
- Short-term research stays of one to two years as part of an ongoing doctorate at a Chinese university that is part of the LMU–ChAN network (so-called 'sandwich scholarships')
- Full doctoral studies lasting up to four years at LMU Faculty of Medicine
LMU faculty members, especially those with existing academic ties to China, are invited to submit so-called open positions in predefined projects by mid-September for inclusion in the next application cycle, which runs from October to December.
