Plagiarism check

The Faculty of Medicine is committed to good scientific practice. In order to counter allegations of plagiarism, we check all dissertations for possible plagiarism before they are submitted for evaluation.

Who gets an iThenticate account?

iThenticate accounts are only available for supervisors of dissertations submitted to the Faculty of Medicine! Doctoral candidates do not receive their own iThenticate account.

A brief explanation of the iThenticate analysis

  • Like other medical faculties, we are increasingly confronted with accusations of plagiarism.
  • To support and protect you, the Board of the Faculty has decided to submit dissertations to a plagiarism check before they are submitted for evaluation to the doctoral office.
  • Thus, we aim to help prevent plagiarism in the future.
  • You can find information on how to handle previously published material in our citation guidelines.
  • Currently, we only check dissertations submitted to our faculty. Unfortunately, habilitation theses, dissertations from other faculties or manuscripts for publications cannot be checked.

  • The dissertation must be registered in the Campus Portal prior to the plagiarism analysis
  • The supervisor must have an iThenticate account. If you do not yet have an account, please send an email to: mmrs@dek.med.uni-muenchen.de
  • The dissertation must be available in its final version, i.e. approved by the supervisor

  • Supervisors or doctoral candidates (with the supervisors in the cc) send the dissertation as a Word document or pdf file to mmrs@dek.med.uni-muenchen.de
  • Please submit only the main part of the dissertation and remove the following prior to the analysis:
    • Title page
    • table of contents
    • bibliography
    • CV
    • Affidavit
    • Declaration of congruency
    • Acknowledgments
    • for cumulative dissertations please also remove the publications
  • For data privacy reasons, the thesis will be reviewed anonymously
  • Please leave figure legends, tables and table legends in the thesis
  • Figures can remain in the document
  • Please let us know the name of the doctoral candidate
  • The supervisor will be informed by e-mail as soon as the thesis has been reviewed
  • The supervisor can now log in to iThenticate, view the review result and document the result in the "evaluation form for the iThenticate analysis (PDF, 115 KB)".
  • The doctoral candidate submits the assessment together with the dissertation to the doctoral office.

  • Log in to your iThenticate account
  • Click on the percentage indicated next to the thesis to open the analysis
  • The percentage itself does not automatically indicate whether plagiarism has occurred in the dissertation! It merely indicates the percentage of matching text fragments with different sources. These can of course also be correct quotations, common phrases, technical terms, etc.!
  • Read the test report carefully. Only you can judge whether the marked passages are potential plagiarism or not.
  • The "Material and methods" section of a paper often contains tried and tested methods and their description. It is often difficult to rephrase these. Accordingly, this part of the dissertation should be considered accordingly.
  • If necessary, it is possible to revise the dissertation once! Please discuss the analysis with your doctoral candidate and have the dissertation uploaded a second and thus final time by the MMRS after the revision.
  • The version of the thesis, which is analysed last, must match the version submitted for evaluation.
  • After assessing the final examination report, please complete and sign the "evaluation form for the iThenticate analysis (PDF, 115 KB)". The statement will then be submitted to the doctoral office together with the dissertation.
  • You do not have to hand in the examination report! The MMRS and the doctoral office have access to the analyses at all times.
