The LMU Medical Faculty is excited to honor and celebrate your successful graduation with a formal ceremony. Organized twice a year by the MMRS (typically in May/June and November), these ceremonies are a special opportunity to recognize your achievements.

Prerequisite for Registration and Participation

  • Scheduling Your Defensio: After all expert opinions on your thesis have been submitted, you will receive a request from the MMRS / Promotionsbüro to schedule your defensio and an invitation to register for the Graduation Ceremony. Please proceed with your registration for the Graduation Ceremony once your defensio has been scheduled, even if it has not yet taken place. It is crucial to register by the specified deadline to allow adequate time for event preparations.

Information

Below you will find all relevent information regarding the ceremony.

We look forward to celebrating your accomplishments with you.

The ceremony will take place at “Friedrich von Gärtner Saal” in the “St. Vinzenz Haus“ at the LMU Klinikum. The building is a former monastery on the hospital grounds of the LMU near the city center.

We recommend to handout directions for your guests (see invitation template (DOCX, 1,732 KB)) as the location is difficult to find, and the use of public transportation (e.g. U-Bahn Goetheplatz or U-Bahn Sendlinger Tor) as there is limited parking on the clinic area.

Information for Wheelchair Users and Strollers:

The event location is accessible for wheelchair users and strollers. Instead of using the direct access from the parking lot, please use the main entrance of the building on the street side, where a ramp is available. Entry will then be through the building.

It is recommended to take a seat at the back of the event room, as there is more space. The back area also has a small side exit, which is convenient for children. Alternatively, the outer seats along the wall are also suitable. Please ensure that the central aisle remains clear, as graduates will process through it during the ceremonial entrance.

Guest admission begins at 4:15 p.m. It is not possible to access the room earlier due to ongoing preparations.

Graduates are expected at 4:15 p.m. on site to be robed in their academic gowns (consisting of a gown, sash and doctoral hat) and for instructions on the proceedings. Once dressed, the graduates are asked to remain in the checkroom until the ceremony begins.

The ceremony begins on time at 4:30 p.m. with the ceremonial entrance of the graduates.

There will be an official part with speeches and handover of certificates (between 1,5 and 2 hours, depending on the amount of graduates) and a more informal part with a small champagne reception. Afterwards, graduates usually go to a restaurant for dinner with their family and friends.

The academic gowns must be returned after the ceremony. The LMU is only renting the academic clothes, therefore it is not possible to keep/purchase the robe and/or hat.

Inviting Family and Friends

  • We kindly ask you to invite your family and friends yourself (up to 4 persons, exceptions possible after consultation).
  • You may use our invitation template (DOCX, 1,732 KB), which includes directions to the event location. The template is customizable and contains detailed information on how to find the venue, which can be quite difficult to locate.
  • Approx. 3 weeks before the event, you will be asked to provide the names of your guests. You will receive a request from the MMRS via email to submit this information.

Inviting Supervisors and Coordinators

  • Your doctoral supervisor (TAC members) and coordinator will be invited directly by the MMRS acording on the information you provided in the online registration form.
  • The official invitation from the MMRS will be sent approximately four weeks before the ceremony (after the registration deadline for graduates).
It is still a nice and important gesture, that you also inform your supervisor (TACs) personally about your participation in the event early on, so they can mark the date in their calendar.

A professional photographer will document the ceremony. All guests are requested to remain seated during the ceremony. There will be a single photo of each graduate on stage and a group photo at the end.

All pictures will be provided to you electronically within a few days after the ceremony for private use.

The certificate of completion confirming your degree will be, regardless of your participation in the Graduation Ceremony, mailed or handed over in person at the Dean's Office.

At the Graduation Ceremony, you will receive a certificate of attendance, presented in a document folder. Please note that this certificate is primarily for commemorative purposes and has no official value.

Unfortunately the MMRS or the LMU does not have any funding opportunities.

If you belong to a core area or associated research training program, please aks your coordinator if there is an opportunity to support you.
