Enrollment for doctoral candidates at the LMU
- Optional enrollment: Doctoral candidates in human medicine, dentistry, human biology or natural sciences can enroll at LMU for 6 semesters.
- Compulsory enrollment: For doctoral candidates in Ph.D. Medical Research, enrollment is mandatory.
Whether you enroll at the Registrar's Office or the International Office depends on where you received your qualifying degree.
You can download your letter of admission or the Letter of Acceptance from the Campus Portal once you have successfully registered your thesis.
Enrollment for international students (if you have completed your doctoral degree in Germany)
Your Letter of Acceptance or your doctoral authorization
- After your successful application, you can register your dissertation in the Campus Portal.
- After all documents for the application have been successfully submitted and checked, you can download your "Letter of Acceptance" or your "Promotionszulassung" from the Campus Portal .
If you have completed your master's degree (or equivalent) in Germany, you can enrol directly at the Studentenkanzlei.

- The "Notification of successful completion of the aptitude test or certificate confirming that the qualification requirements have been met" required by the Registrar's Office is your " Letter of Acceptance " or your " Authorization to award a doctorate " .

Enrollment for international doctoral candidates
Your Letter of Acceptance or your "Promotionsberechtigung"
- After your successful application, you can register your dissertation in the Campus Portal.
- After all documents for the application have been successfully submitted and checked, you can download your "Letter of Acceptance" or your "Promotionsberechtigung" from the Campus Portal .
Registration with the International Affairs Department
- Doctoral candidates who have completed their doctoral qualification abroad must first contact the International Office for enrollment.
- Frist: jeweils der 15. Januar bzw. 15. Juli für das folgende Semester, Nachmeldefrist für das jeweilige Semester bis 21. April bzw. 21. Oktober

You will need to submit the following documents when you apply at the International Office (by post):
- Completed application form (PDF, 622 KB)
- All higher education / university certificates and diplomas, final examination certificates and all transcripts of records
- in the original language — as an officially certified copy
- and with officially certified translation where applicable. Certificates in English, French, Italian, Spanish, Catalan, Latin, Portuguese and Rumanian do not have to be translated.
- for applicants from the USA transcript of records in closed envelopes are needed.
- Registration and certificates of studies previously undertaken at any other German university
- Letter of acceptance to doctoral studies from the respective doctoral committee
- Confirmation from the professor who will supervise your studies
- Updated CV
- Marriage certificate / official proof of change of name (if applicable)
- Evidence of proficiency in German: please refer to the general regulations on proficiency in German. In many cases, doctoral committees will not insist on evidence of proficiency in German.

Receipt of an official letter of admission from the International Affairs Department
- This notification is an important official document for submission to the authorities.
- Please note that the letter of admission from the Department of International Affairs is issued by the Department of International Affairs and is not the same document as your “Letter of Acceptance” or your "Promotionsberechtigung", which are issued by the MMRS or doctoral office at the Medical Faculty.
