Acceptance of applications for the Dr. rer. nat.

Before starting your doctoral project, you must complete an application for admission as a doctoral candidate.

Before starting your doctoral project, you must complete the application for acceptance as an applicant in the Campus Portal.

Acceptance of the application for Dr. rer. nat.

  • Certificate of eligibility from a faculty of natural sciences at LMU
  • Proof that you have passed the preliminary examination (if a preliminary examination is required, this is noted on the Certificate of eligibility)
  • Certificate of your university degree: Proof of a relevant degree in a natural science subject (mathematics, computer science, statistics, physics, chemistry, pharmacy, biology, geosciences or similar)
  • Official, private certificate of good conduct (not older than 3 months)
  • Curriculum vitae with signature

  • Doctoral supervision agreement
  • Certified copy of your university degree (certified copies only, no originals, we do not return documents)
  • Certificate of eligibility from a faculty of natural sciences at LMU (original)
  • Official private certificate of good conduct (original - not older than 3 months)
  • APS certificate (only required for degrees from China, India and Vietnam)

Certificate of eligibility and the preliminary examination

  • To be accepted as a Dr. rer. nat. candidate at the Faculty of Medicine, you must prove that you would be accepted as a doctoral candidate at one of the faculties of natural sciences at LMU.
  • Please contact the faculty responsible for your university degree to request a certificate of eligibility.
  • The following LMU faculties can issue certificates of eligibility:
    • Faculty of Biology
    • Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy
    • Faculty of Physics
    • Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics
    • Faculty of Geosciences

Students who are only entitled to become doctoral candidates at one of the faculties of natural sciences at the LMU after passing a pre-doctoral examination there, can take the preliminary doctoral examination either at that faculty or at the Faculty of Medicine in accordance with the respective doctoral regulations.

  • Goal: Proof of knowledge and skills that can be expected to lead to a successful doctoral project
  • For admission to the pre-doctoral examination, you must submit a written application to the doctoral committee, stating your major subject and two minor subjects. Please contact the doctoral office for more details.

Procedure for the preliminary examination:

  • The doctoral committee appoints the three examiners and selects the chair
  • The chair sets the examination date and invites the candidate at least eight weeks before the date and names the examiners.
  • The pre-doctoral examination is an oral examination (duration approx. 30 - 45 min), topic: the specified major subject and the two minor subjects. The minor subjects must be appropriate to the doctoral project.
