Felix Sommer is a medical historian. He works as an associate researcher at the Institute of Ethics, History and Theory of Medicine at LMU, and also at the Centre for Haemostatic Disorders and Transfusion Medicine (CBT) in Bonn. From 2022 to 2025 he was a research associate in the DFG project ‘To discipline and to professionalise. The institutionalisation of ethics in medicine in the Federal Republic of Germany since the 1970s’.
Previous positions include the Central Institute for Mental Health (ZI) in Mannheim, the German Federal Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), and, from 2017 to 2021, the Institute for Medical Humanities at the University Hospital Bonn. Until January 2025, he was a member of the Ethics Commission at the Medical Faculty of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn.
His academic interests include psychiatry in the 19th and 20th centuries, medicine under National Socialism, global health, medicine in the colonial era, and research ethics.
