In addition to conducting research in medical ethics and medical history, a central task of the Institute is to provide education in ethics, history and theory of medicine for students at the Faculty of Medicine at LMU Munich.

Courses
Teaching at the Institute covers Ethics, History and Theory of Medicine, as well as Medical Terminology. Individual faculty members and affiliated lectures also teach students how to apply research methods in humanities and social sciences. The majority of our teaching is integrated anchored in the curricula of degree programmes at the Faculty of Medicine (Medicine, Dentistry, Epidemiology, Public Health).
In Medicine and Dentistry, we offer courses in Medical Terminology during the preclinical phase, as well as a range of electives on medical ethics and medical history. During the clinical phase of the Medicine and Dentistry programmes takes place the cross-disciplinary subject History (Theory) and Ethics of Medicine. In addition Research Ethics and Public Health Ethics are taught in the Master's programmes in Public Health and Epidemiology (taught in English).

Qualification Theses and Doctoral Studies
Students may apply to complete a Module 6 project (Medicine), a project in the Sciense Semester M-32 (Dentistry), or a Master's or doctoral thesis in History or Ethics of Medicine. Unsolicited applications may submitted any time by email. Please note that supervision capacity is currently very limited and only a small number of places are available.
The following doctoral degrees can be pursued at the Institute of Ethics, History and Theory of Medicine:
- Dr. med. (Doctor of Human Medicine)
- Dr. med. dent. (Doctor of Dental Medicine)
- Dr. med. rer. biol. hum. (Doctor of Human Biology)
