We reflect on medicine

Guiding principle
The Institute for Ethics, History and Theory of Medicine aims to promote a historical understanding of medical practice, reflect on the conceptual foundations of medicine and address ethical questions in the context of health and illness. We work on these tasks in an interdisciplinary team using a broad spectrum of methods, taking into account the social relevance of medicine over time.

What do we do?
Our core tasks at the Institute for Ethics, History and Theory of Medicine include research and teaching in all three subject areas: medical ethics, medical theory and medical history. In addition, we organise lectures to facilitate exchange within the Institute, across disciplines and with the public on current topics of social relevance. Through our participation in advisory committees, we contribute to shaping ethical discourse among experts and in the public sphere. We promote the competence of healthcare professionals in practice by offering training and continuing education programmes. In addition, we offer expert advice on ethical issues in patient care, population-based health promotion and prevention measures, biomedical research and the organisation of healthcare.

What sets us apart?
We reflect on medicine in relation to practice-relevant issues using the appropriate scientific methods. Our work requires collaboration between different scientific disciplines, which we bring together under one roof wherever possible and integrate through external partnerships. The reflection and, where necessary, further development of the analytical-conceptual and social-empirical methods we use is just as important as building bridges between fundamental scientific reflection and practical application. Our goal is to produce high-quality scientific contributions that can influence professional and public discourse in German- and English-speaking countries. With practice- and solution-oriented work, we aim to help shape an ethically, historically and conceptually reflective practice in healthcare.

How do we work together?
The institute is a place of interdisciplinary cooperation in research, teaching, training and consulting. We support each other in performing our tasks and are interested in regular exchange, in which we share knowledge and methods with each other. We treat each other with respect and appreciation. The integration of new employees is supported through structured measures and collegial guidance.
Employees at our institute are always invited to actively participate in and contribute to the life of the institute. We attach great importance to the promotion of young scientists. Their skills are developed through appropriate training opportunities and continuous, personal, constructive feedback from senior staff.
